Antivirus For Mac – Available Options

DiggLinkedInStumbleUponShare

With viruses becoming more common on Macs, antivirus protection is a necessity instead of an option now. Hackers are now focusing their attentions on the secure Apple operating system more than ever before. Basically, as the popularity of Macs increases, so do malicious attacks. Macs do have plenty of antivirus options available, though.

New Offering

Avira has now become the latest antivirus software to be released for Macs. This free application from the German security company does not contain any form of marketing or advertising, making it completely hassle free for users. Some other free antivirus applications do have ads in place, but the majority don’t.

Apple Admitting Vulnerabilities

Apple once touted their systems as impenetrable. Now they are admitting their systems are just as vulnerable as other operating systems. The main difference is Macs used to be more elite. With them becoming more mainstream, hackers are seeing bigger results from their labors.

While many well known security companies are offering Mac versions of their antivirus software, Apple is releasing their own tool to help with the most common type of Mac attacks – malware. XProtect, released in 2009, is regularly updated to detect and prevent current and existing malware. All Mac users should consider adding this tool to their antivirus software for even better protection.

Free and Paid

Apple Mac users have the same choice to make as Windows users. Free or paid antivirus protection? The answer comes down to how much protection the user feels they need. Avira and Sophos both offer free antivirus for Macs. This means never having to worry about updating subscriptions or paying extra to upgrade to the latest version of the software.

However, many argue the protection isn’t on the same level as paid antivirus subscriptions such as those offered by popular security companies Intego, Kaspersky Lab, Symantec, Trend Micro, PC Tools and McAfee. Paid subscriptions often provide faster antivirus updates for the latest threats and have large teams on hand for customer support and virus removal assistance.

Norton Identity Safe

Yesterday, Symantec had a press release Norton Solves Password Pain with Identity Safe which announced the availability of Norton Identity Safe, free of charge. The service can be used on devices like PCs, Macs, iPhone and iPad, and Android devices.

Further, the press release mentioned that the features of this Norton service include:

  • Multi-platform synchronization – Synchronizes information across platforms and devices, eliminating the hassle of remembering multiple user names, passwords, contact information and credit card numbers. Norton Identity Safe allows users to access their credentials anywhere they go.
  • Safe Search & Norton Safe Web – Help consumers protect their identities and avoid potentially risky sites by letting them know whether a site is safe to visit directly from their search results.
  • Share – Allows users to safely share online content by sending URLs through email and social networking plugins, directly from Norton Identity Safe.

To remind you, Norton Identity Safe has been around for a while as a part of Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security products (Norton AntiVirus software does not some with this feature). As a part of these security software packages, Norton Identity Safe is described as a service which helps you manage your identities and provide additional security while you perform online transactions. This Norton service lets you remotely access your personal information such as your address, login information, passwords, and credit card details stored in your online vault.

The following features in Norton Identity Safe let you view your sensitive information:

  • Logins – Lets you manage your login information, such as your login credentials for your online bank account, email user ID, and password.
  • Cards – Lets you view your personal information, such as addresses, date of birth, and credit card information.
  • Notes – Lets you manage the personal details, such as passport numbers and social security numbers.

In addition to being a repository of sensitive information, Norton Identity Safe provides the following features:

  • Protects you from identity theft when you perform online transactions.
  • Manages the card information of all your credit cards.
  • Lets you use your Identity Safe data when you are on the move.
  • By saving your data using an online vault, you can access your sensitive Identity Safe data from any computer with Internet connection.
  • Provides access to your Identity Safe data without depending on any additional hardware or software.

Norton Identity Safe lets you view and access some of the Identity Safe features even after the product expires. This way, you can still view your login details even after your Norton product expires.

Now, there are some facts that are worth of noting in regards of both Norton Identity Safe as a standalone service and of the one that is part of Norton software products, and they are:

  • The Mac version will not include Safe Search, Norton Safe Web, or Share features explained more fully below.
  • Norton Identity Safe: Mobile Edition application must be installed on mobile devices to access Norton Identity Safe. The mobile applications complement the PC client, which must be downloaded and installed prior to installing the mobile applications.
  • Share feature initially available only in PC version of Norton Identity Safe. Share feature is not available for use with current versions of Norton Internet Security, Norton 360, or Norton One.

In any case, the idea of having passwords secured away in a cloud adds to their security in the case of the computer failure, plus the ability to access it from various places is not bad at all. Furthermore, automated credential entry without typing prevents those keyloggers from intercepting such valuable data. As long as Symantec keeps things secure and resistant to hackers and hardware failures.

Norton One

It has been a few days since Symantec has released its new service called Norton One.

I say service as this is a membership based offer which allows a user to download multiple Norton software products that can be used on several OS platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, and Android.

The products and services available through this service are:

  • Norton 360 version 6.0
  • Norton Internet Security 2012
  • Norton Internet Security for Mac
  • Norton Mobile Security
  • 25 GB of online storage
  • Unlimited virus and spyware removal service from a Norton One expert (Applicable during active membership period only)
  • 24×7 dedicated, members-only support

The price is set at $149.99 US for up to 5 devices, with the possibility to add additional devices at the prorated price. The service is available in select markets like US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Norton One is certainly a new approach to the antivirus and Internet security market which has evolved into an environment in which an average user may carry an iPhone and/or Android tablet, use Mac based laptop and still have a PC at home or office. When you add a whole family here, plus the fact that many users start using such devices during their childhood, it ads up quickly to the need for a service like Norton One.

Is the price set right?

Well, this is up to an end user to sit down and do a quick calculation when comparing Norton One to a bunch of separate products and services provided by Norton or a competing brand. That’s the easiest way of checking if this pays off or not.

In addition, getting into trouble for not being adequately protected cannot be paid once the data is lost, or if countless hours and fees are experienced.

So, this is a great opportunity for those that have suffered by having an issue with multiple products/services being maintained separately. To get a full picture of this new addition to the existing panel of Norton’s products and services, we’ll need to wait a bit I believe.
